More lore to add to the ever shifting pile

Rob Bennett is paying for vanity-published books and articles in various newspapers and magazines. Here we will discuss these attempts to gain glory in the public eye.

More lore to add to the ever shifting pile

Postby DRiP_Guy » 08/05/08 at 18:27:10

Rob massages the story of his exit from corporate life from telling to telling, so I thought I would throw this in to the "hist0rical rec0rd -- a bit more hocolore to add to the ever shifting pile. I gotta admit there was no way I was gonna read that whole freakin' transcript, so I just saw this and grabbed it. There might be even better nuggets in there, but I just can't drag myself to go read more of his tripe right now - Hocomania is best taken in small doses:

Rob Bennett: ?Oh, I left my corporate employment in August 2000, so that?s roughly when I started the book. ?In August 2000 I was working, I was doing work preparing my selling list special report, I wrote a special report on how to retire early called ?Secrets of retiring early?.

The company where that was being sold went out of business in early 2001 and when they went out of business I said I am going to expand this into a book so I started working on the book in early 2001.

Mike Michael Lewis: ?Ok, great. ?So basically you were at a point where you didn?t have savings, you were caught in a job that paid well but was not what you wanted to do, got the realization, you shifted your thinking and then in the course of about seven or eight years, you actually got to the point where you could take off and decide this is what I want to do and I am going to do it, is that about that?

Rob Bennett: ?Yeah, that is correct, it was about nine and a half years, it was less than ten years.

Ten years later, he has still not shared with the Finacia1 Freed0m C0mmunity what his total number of books sold was, even though he specifically promised he would, saying they were owed that information, nor has he updated anyone on how he is coming on book #2.

Part 2 is even more of hoot!

The comedy starts off with this introduction of the illustrious, Rob Bennett;

"Rob Bennet[sic] is the founder of the Financial Freedom Community and an expert at seeing the connections between human emotions and money decisions. The community began in December 1999 and spread over time to include 10 discussion boards. We have had tens of thousands of ordinary middle-class people from all over the world participate in our discussions. His book, Passion Saving, summarizes and extends the principles that this community has used to become financially free, and engage in truly soul-satisfying work.

Such a fine collection of whoppers! ?;D

But wait, there's morrrreeeeeeee!

http://personallifemedia.com/podcasts/2 ... ng-passion

"Mark Michael Lewis: Passionsaving.com and you have a blog there, where you are continually speaking about this and there is a community of people. People can interact with and ask real questions of real people and get a sense for this such that they can ease into this way of thinking and begin to look at their own numbers and see whether their freedom store have this. Is that right?

Rob Bennett: Yes. Absolutely. And there are tons of materials [xx] site, you know. I love it when people buy the book, but there is tons of materials there for free. So, I encourage people to come and explore and if you have questions, ask questions. There is contact tab there on the left hand side of every page. Send me your e-mail, participate at the blog. If you get into it, you going to want to buy the book, but that?s optional. [laughs] I hope you do, but explore the ideas because we work with people and the community. We learn from these people."

Now that was one hard-hitting interview!

Oh My.

Whoppers, indeed.

He makes it sound like he was the Johny Appleseed of some great movement; when in fact, most people scouring the internet for financial info and advice, including those at"the ten boards" that he did not create, have never even heard of this Loopy Whack-job.

Of the small remainder that perhaps have heard of him, 90 percent of those just ignore him, 9 percent try to engage him and get nowhere, and perhaps 1 percent follow his exploits as entertainment.

Of course, I have not provided much more evidence of that than Rob does for his grandiose claims to the contrary, so let's reduce it to the language all Americans understand. Money. Rob needed money when he worked for six figures, he certainly needed money when he tried to be a stay at home writer. His exploits on his Plops I, II, and III as well as ?attempts at book writing (x2) and as pay-per-quote article-whore, have all been geared for trying to make a buck outta this thing.

Yet, except for that single initial amazing $15K windfall that apparently befell Rob at the start of this whole nutty journey (which amazes me to this day, and for which most observers of this saga were not even present, as it was so long ago), what evidence has Rob ever provided that would lead anyone to believe he has made any money whatsoever off of the remainder of his various full-time efforts?

None.

Had Rob's overall approach had any resonance or effectiveness or value to it at all, then books would be moving, lectures being booked, he would be on the cover of WSJ, etc. None of that has come to pass. Rob is known in only two tiny circles:

1. The small band of specialists who ran across his brand of craziness, and savor seeing it in action, so follow him to see what lunacy he will pronounce next,

2. He is now apparently starting to be formally recognized, among all other potential choices on the Internet (and the internet is huge!), not just in the Retire Early area, but as the consummate general troll that we all know him to be.

http://joi.ito.com/weblog/2004/12/20/happy-trolls.html

http://openpolitics.ca/known+trolls

Here, Rob even brazenly trolls an article about handling trolls, and my what whoopers he tells!

Famously spamming Scoot_Burns and bragging about it:
http://www.passionsaving.com/200711.html#e518

Rob gloats over his multiple bannings and the shut down at No Fee boards, while doing what? Why, Trolling/spamming yet another board, of course! This was a terrific troll, Rob. Shame that outlet for mania dried up for you, ?as did many others that got wise to you.
http://socialize.morningstar.com/NewSoc ... 1218021617

And then Hocus earns the Professional Troller's ultimate accolade-- someone ELSE doing the heavy lifting, and continuing the crap, without Rob even lifting a finger. "Auto-self-trolling" -- Cat-nip flavored nirvana for the discriminating troll!
http://socialize.morningstar.com/NewSoc ... vSeq=50422

Here is a single exchange where Rob illustrates the fine art of trolling -- take note, and watch an expert deflect, accuse others, refuse to answer, use appeals to emotion, pontificate at length without saying anything, project onto the person feelings of the writer ("why so angry?") etc. This is trolling raised to art.

Rob found time to come look around yesterday at around 4:00 PM, and today he was most recently here at 5:45 AM, yet in the two hours since then, has not got his daily PlopIII article up?

Man, how is his 'audience' <snarfle> supposed to maintain interest in that rat's nest of lunacy if he himself can't even be bothered to post timely?

This really belongs in "Hoco-inanities and short non-responsive posts".
Seriously, hocus, I don't know if you're really insane or you just believe that acting that way is a good way to get attention.

My closest friends say that it appears to them that's a little bit of both.. -- hocus 2007.

Perhaps.

I worry, though, that that might not be the first place that Scooter's fans go to look for it.

He's still writing a nationally syndicated column on personal finance, still actively involved with Asset Builder Inc. (an investment advisory firm), still writing books (Spend Til' the End being the latest) and sailing the oceans in his spare time!

And all the while the demented star of the show here in the HocoPlaypen still attempts to peddle copies of his vanity book (currently molding away in his garage), still posts deranged rants on his Same Old Slop III and still exchanges love notes with his boy-pal JWR over at the Wise Old Pensioners Plop.

If this is what believing in Passive Investing does to a person, it would be fair to say that I want no part of it.

No problem.

The rest of us Passive Investors will enjoy nicely growing portfolios thanks in part to the wise advice of Sc0tt Burns and others who favor Passive Investing using widely diversified portfolios.

Oh my! Must have hit a raw HocoNerve! :o Poor dear hocus, I can see where a comparison of your "accomplishments" to those of Sc0tt Burns might upset you so. But you see, Sc0tt achieved his status through education, hard work, talent, perseverance and all those other intangibles that make successful people successful. You on the other hand, have tried to become an expert on personal finance in a manner similiar to that often employed by a 2-year old; kicking and screaming and demanding that people accept you as an authority on personal finance. It looks to me like Sc0tt's strategy is proving to be more effective. ;) But even though you've decided to squander your inheritance by spending your days trolling the internet, don't be too depressed that your life has no meaning. You're still the father of two little boys and you still provide much amusement to this Merry Band of Goons who still enjoy playing Poke-the-Troll here in your playpen!
