Memorial Thread

Robert Michael Bennett aka "Hocus" has suggested that there has not been sufficient and proper attention given to the passing of his sidekick, John Walter Russell aka JWR. He further suggests that the posts that have been done were somehow not respectful enough.

What I propose to satisfy Mr. Bennett's urge to keep his departed friend in the eye of the community (should they wish to look) is to perhaps simply reprise some of the posts that referred to JWR, or were authored by JWR prior to his passing.

What better remembrance could one wish than to have their own words brought up anew for review after departing?

I will just provide links, without any editorial comment, so as to not inadvertently run afoul of Mr. Bennett's seemingly hypersensitive (some would say bizarre) view of what constitutes proper respect.

Let us begin:

A classic:
There is one area in which Hocus and I disagree. I favor censorship on discussion boards. Hocus is willing to tolerate almost anything. I prefer heavy censorship.

My last rememberance was hearing about him being banned from several new boards that he joined after being tossed from the Fool. I consider him to be the Billy Martin of financial message boards. Martin used to be one who seemed knowledgable and was somewhat effective early on at each one of his managerial stops. Inevitably, he always wore out his welcome. His excess baggage tended to outweigh any positive message he may have initially had.

I have modified this post to highlight an error that I had made...

This first part turns out to be wrong.

It was my error.

I had inadvertently changed...

I have found another error.
....

Have fun.

JohnDCraig: ?I prefer the Shiller general observations and the Gordon Equation to the JWR model. Among other things, the model builds in an historical 7 percent real return, which I don't believe is supportable.?

Rob Bennett is behind schedule. He has not yet written "The Truth About SWRs." I am not sure that he ever will.

Have fun.

I?d say if JWR?s skills as a numbers guy are reflected in his site layout acumen, then I can take a pass altogether! Permanently. As in ?Forever?.

Many people ask Rob to describe how our investing system performs compared to pas sive investing systems, such as staying persistently invested in something like the Coffeehouse Portfolio or the Wellington Fund.

We never dignify such rude and impertinent questions with a response.

The last one is my favorite.  Unbelievably entertaining.   How I miss that man....

For some unfathomable reason, this reminds me of an old guy with whom I used to work.  The faculty meetings were at 1 pm and this guy apparently had martinis for lunch.   He'd stand up, tottering, tell all the young whipper-snappers to be quiet and make a long pronouncement.   S..l..o..w..l..y, so that the stone carver could keep up.   Utterly incomprehensible, a bit angry, and never on-topic.

He did this twice, then friends intervened and he disappeared into rehab, then retirement.

Too bad that hocus doesn't have friends.
