Spammer

Postby tashina » 03/13/06 at 18:46:43

We had a spammer this afternoon. Seemed like a person and not a bot. He/she created usernames as fast as I could delete them and refreshed IPs too. Annoying. Probably put up 100-200 posts in about 20 minutes, all linking to porn sites. Luckily, I saw him within about 5 minutes of his getting started.

I am not up to date on how to stop spammers, so for now until intercst checks in here, I have made it to where you can only post once per every 3 minutes. Shouldn't affect most of you, but will slow him down if he comes back.

You're not expecting us to really believe that story are you? Did you save any of the porn sites? I'm getting tired of my current collection. Just wondering.... :-X

So, you send me unsolicited email, with a link that opens 328 windows, which when I close, opens 253 more, which them locks-up my computer...

That REALLY is an effective way to attract customers!! Why didn't I think of that...

According to this link, "captcha" image recognition support (or the equivalent) is built into this forum.

If you are asking how to set up the image validation with your YaBB forum, you simply have to go to Admin Center -> Flood/Session Security and enable that (assuming you are using YaBB 2).

This is where it gives you a silly looking graphic and has you type the letters and numbers in. raddr's site has this. A bit  annoying, but it stops spam bots and can slow down individual spammers.

I've seen this feature built into phpbb, but I haven't used this YaBB2 software, so I haven't actually tried it as this board would use it.

I just activated the image validation function. Let's see if it helps.

I've deleted 5 or 6 spammers over the past 2 days.

I had been deleting 2-3 day for the past couple of weeks. I hadn't had to do any in the last few days. I thought they were leaving us alone. Oh well. Thanks for adding the new feature and thanks to BMJ for suggesting it. Hope it helps.
