I have just looked at the latest infantile, irrational, delusional nonsense going on at h***'s SWR Research board. It irritates the hell out of me. Obviously I could just read the other boards but it irritates me considerably to know it's tolerated. Much better not to be irritated - I won't remove my name from the members list just yet (don't know how anyway Very Happy) but for the moment - I quit

kenm -

sorry to hear that.

mentally, i simply excise the idiocy component of any given post and seize on the good stuff.

alternatively, maybe you could consider just avoiding that board.

i apply these habits in my regular life, too, with some success.

besides, I'm s'posed to be the one who can't tolerate stupidity and you're the one who's s'posed to eschew teaching pigs to sing. Wink

please reconsider, kenm, i find your insights valuable.

Hmm? Interesting. Why would someone's posts on their own board bother you? I find this a somewhatt irrational move from an otherwise rational poster. Why not take wanderer's advice and just avoid the board? If you would like your own board to be delusional on I'd be glad to give you one. Wink

What hocus does on his board is his business as long as everyone on that board obeys the site rules. So there really is nothing to tolerate. However, If you really want to delete your membership just send me a PM or email and I'll do it. But that would make me very unhappy. Crying or Very sad

Ataloss previously asked ElSupremo to delete hocus's board from ataloss's screen, and it seemed like ES was going to do so.

Is that a possibility for any of us members, ES?

I hope you'll stick around, KenM,

Sincerely,
Ben

Actually no, he did say something about using nuclear weapons but... Wink

Not at this time. Perhaps in the future but for now you will all need to invoke a little discipline and just ignore what you don't like.

I don't know why but I'm having a hard time with this too.

Hi Ken,

I agree 100% with your assessment of hocus' board but as far as I'm concerned it is just a blip of noise on the radar screen, just like the "Badger Boys" forum. Just ignore the renegade boards like I do and you'll be much happier. Wink I would like you to stay at NFB. Very Happy

I wrote my original post in a hurry - so a bit more explanation.

ES
Quote:

Could I call it "The Rational SWR Research Group"? (only joking - I'd consider it very impertinent of me to think I had the knowledge and expertise to lead SWR research Wink). I don't make any claims on my own rationality - I'd rather be Cap'n Kirk than Mr Spock any day - but that shows I'm also delusional because unfortunately I'm more of a Scotty character than Kirk Very Happy. On the question of tolerance, it is not an issue of hocus breaking site rules and I would not want to stop him posting but, as I said on the Blunt Words thread, hocus seems to have had some sort of special license or latitude to make factually incorrect and/or extremely biassed and/or irrational and/or very selective statements and there appeared to be a reluctance to correct him (generalising only). I can only conclude that this is a vote of sympathy for the way he was treated at TMF . In my reponses to hocus this means I have to be careful to try and guess what might be sensitive issues and this puts a constraint on my response - as gummy might say - it ain't fun anymore (BTW anybody seen gummy lately since his comment on one of hocus's "invalidity" posts - perhaps it ain't fun for him any more either Wink)

But seriously, although I've used the internet extensively, I have quaint, old fashioned views on internet boards which is why I've only ever become a member and contributed to two boards, NFB and one other. My personal standards are that I have no wish to be associated with boards that include elements of a personal agenda or propoganda and/or self-aggrandizement and/or personal gain. The Hocus Board regrettably includes all three with hocus's continuing personal vendetta against intercst; hocus's repetitively strident claims on being the first on the valuation issue and his demands that everyone thank him for it and hocus's intention to use NFB and The Hocus Board material to write a book.

I'm in an age group where retirement is a continual topic of conversation but internet usage may be limited. Previously I've recommended to friends to have a look at NFB because the two original boards avoid completely any personal agenda/propoganda/self-aggrandizement/personal gain slant. There is now the very slanted SWR Research Group board which regrettably, within NFB, looks to be on the same footing as the two main boards i.e. there is no indication in its title that it's a personal board and it's included in the same list as the two main boards. I'm unable to choose not to be a member of the Hocus Board because a member of NFB automatically is a member of all boards at NFB - I can well imagine hocus claiming in future that he has 184 members of his board. To me, all of this gives a legitimacy to the Hocus Board that I don't think it deserves. From what I have heard went on at the REHP board it has, in my eyes as an outsider, reduced the credibility of the TMF as a whole. To have the Hocus Board seeming to an outsider to be on the same footing as the FIRE and Index boards perhaps has the potential to similarly appear to reduce the credibility of NFB.

So, getting very long-winded, I have no problem with hocus having his own personal board and doing what he likes with it. I'd be happy if I can choose which boards I sign up to as a member and I can exclude the Hocus Board. Presumably that may be administratively difficult therefore, as an alternative, I'd be happy if NFB had a seperate section called Personal Boards and the titles of the boards indicated that they were personal e.g. hocus's board was included in the Personal Board list with a title such as Hocus's SWR Research Group.

However I don't expect ES to change NFB just to make me happy Very Happy, so I'll check back in a couple of weeks or so and see how I feel then. But I doubt I'll continue - I joined NFB for informative entertainment - I don't want to have to exercise discipline by ignoring something I find irritating (I have to do enough of that in real life Rolling Eyes)

In case no one has noticed I have stopped worrying about offending hocus and I have given up on trying to get him to stop saying things that are obviously incorrect

sort of liberating

initially I invented an "invisible friend," Bob to disagree with hocus but finding hocus resistant to hints I have become open in my disagreement

I have no further interest in trying to convince hocus of anything

I will provide a counterpoint but if hocus wants to go on making laughable claims it doesn't bother me Wink

I think this is not a bad idea for any board that is personally requested and moderated. We could expand the Community section to be Community/Personal Interests.

I dunno, though. Whatever ES wants is fine by me.

Greetings Ken Smile

I appreciate your point of view. Hang in there a week or so, we are working on a few ideas.

Looks good - I know you do this stuff yourself so hadn't expected that you could do anything - as Ben says

Haven't been here that long so nice to know I'd be missed - one of my (many) weaknesses is a propensity towards ridicule if provoked Twisted Evil. I was about to post a particularly malicious piece of ridicule when I decided it was time to walk away - therefore the on-the-spur-of-the-moment "I quit" stuff . Wanderer, the old proverb "Never try to teach a pig to sing" doesn't indicate I'm a tolerant person - it's to remind me that I'm far from tolerant and that I mustn't get involved in crusades, lost causes and unproductive arguments - hence walk away Smile.

So I'll stick around - might even go and post on a couple of topics Very Happy.

Personally I just tend to ignore the chaos and disruption. If I don't want to read it, I don't read it. I sleep better that way Shocked
