Article: About Goldman Sachs research on EM

Post by peteyperson »

Development could unleash huge potential
A report arguing that four of the biggest emerging markets are likely to dominate the world economy in the years ahead has attracted much attention. If only such a scenario could come about.

The study by Goldman Sachs, an investment bank, focuses on the BRICs: Brazil, Russia, India and China. It argues that, on realistic assumptions, their collective economic weight could easily exceed that of the world's current six largest economies by 2050. By 2041 China looks set to overtake America as the world's biggest economy.

the author goes a bit easy on the responsibility of the developing nations, no? reaching back to the 1930s for a Latin American ref? What about the 1960s through the present? i wonder how he explains the failed economic policies of the current Iranian socialist regime. Are they too much under the US thumb?

I don't argue that there is an element of western protectionism, but emerging markets are trying to find their capitalist sea legs. Some will, some won't, and there's sure to be a lot of heartache in the interim.

Still, one very unique thing one finds as one travels the globe is that the US, at least until recently, embraced a very aggressive brand of capitalism. It is what brought my unwashed relatives to its shores lo these many moons. The opportunity for at least a semi-fair shake. Fair shakes are not de rigueur in much of the rest of the world. It's a set up: certain people are pre-selected to win. there is a reason the most bustling economic city in the Middle east, Dubai, has a stock market that can most charitably be called 'somnolent'.

Anyway, the capitalism thing is America's ultimate advantage, IMO. Monkeying with it is playing with fire. And not the good kind of FIRE, either.
