I recommend <I>The Millionaire Next Door</i>.

There was also an earlier discussion where a dummy's book recommended comparing net worth to gross salary. Petey, I'm one who won't return to TMF with its present management. I wonder about this quotation and which book you are quoting. Similar material is found in The Millionaire Next Door for def...

Would you repost your good stuff here?

From my point of view I do not like being linked to sites I can't view. I've done my best to avoid this in the index funds FAQ. This has nothing to do with hocus or copyrights. I have some great stuff over there as well. I guess it's gone forever! I agree about not liking pointers to pay sites. Wan...

Hi, Kramer. Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you find my posts of some interest or value. Your spreadsheets cover another of the holes in my spreadsheet, as FMOs' address the real estate issues that I neglect. Since I'm not in the accumulation phase and don't do slice and dice, I don't have as mu...

I NEED more than two paragraphs.

Petey, I have found a wonderful advantage of these insane posts (my simple rule is to ignore anything over 2 paragraphs. These posts are usually just arguing about junk). doggone it, Caseynshan, how can I explain my beautiful mathematical theories, describe a spread sheet for retirement planning, o...

Some Folks.

Karma, did you find Some Folks here http://www.stephen-foster-songs.de/Foster28.htm? It's a site in Germany. If you mouse on Melodie you can hear the song in a MIDI transcription. A human voice is better, but the MIDI gives you the idea. I was a little surprised to find Foster appreciated in Germany...

I don't claim that my work establishes a SWR. I don't have a brief label for what I compute either. I use mathematical optimization to find a current after-tax budget that stabilizes the purchasing power of the retirement boodle, er, stash until I'm 95, while providing a constant after-tax standard ...

Right, Karma, and Mr. Bennett has just heard, but cannot believe, that Jane will soon receive a proposal of marriage from rich Mr. Darcy, financially independent from birth. [See how hard I struggled to get back on topic?] How about this one? Some folks get grey hairs, Some folks do, some folk...

Another calm English comment:

Hi, FMO, Thanks for the comment. I know you like spread sheets as much as I do. Your most-used spread sheet addresses only the accumulation phase while mine addresses only the retirement phase. If we had one that covers both, we could address questions such as this: How should I distribute my saving...

Hi, Mac, Your two suggested uses of the spread sheet are both valuable. I have exercised mine for both those questions. For me, one answer was to start Social Security at age 65 and 4 months, rather than any time sooner. That result comes as no surprise though, because I was looking at living to age...

How about the government's own IRA link?

Hi, ataloss Thanks for putting in those links. (What does AAAAA stand for?) Some references on IRAs would be appropriate too. http://www.irs.gov/formspubs/page/0,,id=12598,00.html is the government's own current site on these matters. There may be a new URL annually for each new edition of the contr...

Spread sheets for Personal Financial Planning

Have any of you developed spread sheets for your personal financial planning? Do you think you might? I have had a lot of use from mine and I'd be happy to discuss the matter here with any of you. Here are some of the inputs to my spread sheet: Current total value of all tax-deferred accounts Curren...

LOL - so I guess that what ataloss, myself, and others have contributed to the subject of SRWs is nil? Should the FAQ explain acronyms?

for ataloss: I have found another good review of Millionaire Next Door . It is at http://www.dealtime.com/xMPR-~PD-4865364864~PT-xMPR~RI-985455. It popped up when I was looking for a definition of PAW. The authors define three categories of wealth-accumulators: PAW's, or prodigious accumulators of w...

Petey the Person: Wonderful stuff. I was wondering where you get it. While my equations and knowledge of economics is limited to date, I would be interested to consider any books you recommend. S&P 500 Companies invest outside the US

I agree with Petey that it would be interesting to see data on the correlation or lack of correlation between various investment options, followed by an analysis of whether this condition will persist and whether an investor can exploit it profitably. Lacking that information, I am more than content...

Market performance and inflation do not completely determine

Even perfect foreknowledge of market performance and inflation do not completely determine what a planner's withdrawals should be. Hocus said: I see no reason why one could not use the SWR concept as the first step in the process of determining a PWR in accord with your goal of maximizing the utilit...

Is the S&P 500 actually two asset classes, LcG and LcV?

raddr: If you make a big bet on a single asset class at the beginning of the withdrawal phase, in this case LcG, and it gets clobbered early then you better lower your withdrawal rate or face likely disaster. If I read this correctly, raddr is referring to me and to my S&P 500 index dominated in...
