I like John Mauldin's quote that the benchmark in this environment is is a mmkt fund. My colleagues, barely chastened victims of the late 90s gogo nonsense think I'm nuts for saying that. They rode the NT express from $1 a share (if you believe all their purchase point claims - I don't) to $8.60. It...

I admit to being somewhat puzzled by REIT returns. In light of their 'clear' (90%+ agreed they were) overvaluation (say 20%) relative to NAV, their bond like rents (they move upward but slowly), the recent sell-off makes some sense. And some market irrationality coming to its senses. (Still kick mys...

bensolar - it is indeed a strange world. only explanation I have is that high dividend payers like reits and bonds have to be adjusted down to make up for the rising interest rates. So if, say, to attract reit investors, reits have to offer 4% real, and inflation looks like it will run 6%, then pric...

Great stuff guys! I'll try to address these as I have time. Kramer: What you should do depends a lot on your tax situation, so here goes a little advice not knowing the specifics of that: One of our weirdisms is an unnaturally low tax rate due to FEIE. We are relatively nonchalant re: taxes as we ge...

Thanks for the responses fellas. Good thread on VGPMX. There's gold in them thar luscious mounds o' spongecake (bpp's venerable twinkie hoard). I am also looking at the Vanguard Basic Materials etf. i can't swallow hard enuf to buy the ishares stuff at .6%. Rather buy the top ten and just be done wi...

Portfolio advice sought

We recently sold one of our properties. Had to reallocate A LOT of money (for us, at least). I, of course, moved a substantial amount to REITs, which promptly got creamed. 7%+ divvies eases the pain a bit (VGSIX and some other middle of the road funds). I kept in mind the 'you show me yours' thread,...

Interesting. so SWR would still be abt 2%+- after 4 years in.

Not questioning your skills, JWR, but I wish I could figure out if that 'Student t' .68% adjustment made sense. Unfortunately, my knowledge of stats is sorely lacking.

I agree. They should have used 'median'. 'Average' is confusing.

IIRC, the data from the OFHEO (which I think is where this data came from) tracks resales of same dwelling. FMO will know offhand.

FMO linked to this at another board: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A49857-2004Jan2.html The logic detailed there (with one exception - we still believe the economy has a lot more stops and starts left in it) is why we continued to hold thru the interest rate bottom of 2002 (and near ...

Interesting thread. But I think FI must over-ride everything else ... even if one does not RE, for me, achieving FI certainly made a difference to my approach to employment and for some years now I've enjoyed work because I've kept on working more or less on my own terms - almost like a well paid ho...

LOL! I finally (!) actually read the MSN post by hocus. Toward the end he mentions my malfeasance and my unethical debating techniques. I guess I subconsciously was looking for my name in bold. Oy gestalt!

I had in mind you, wanderer, hocus, and more. snoop - For some reason, hocus was not content to stay on the 'Research' board (set up for him and anyone who chose to discuss their topics ad nauseum). I thought that was mighty generous of es. Many folks with no background with hocus found his approac...

Well said, petey. I was a (the?) person who solicited hocus posting here. He wore out his welcome even with me. I wasn't for banning, but I'm not clear how our community is poorer for his absence given his recent posting practices. What was I getting from his presence recently? If I sat down and att...

Hocus seems to need to be the center of attention, the 'guru', 'misunderstood', 'insightful'. I thought he was insightful on some of the older stuff. I found his 'earth shaking' insights on SWRs particularly uninformative. C'est la vie. It would be interesting to see what sorts of 'facts' JWR1945 wa...

On a seperate note Hocus older posts from the fool.com was really good stuff (non-SWR related!).

Careful, SamCooke may interpret that as a slight of the earth-shaking findings he and JWR are unearthing as they plumb the descending colon of SWRs.

I credited raddr. i should've credited samcooke, who raddr merely quoted. I don't recommend expelling noodle soup, or even broth, that way.
