Chips, I had to read your example a few times before I could figure out why I had a problem. Your example uses a return of 2^n which provides the return of 1 at each level. The quoted example (Bernoulli's) gives a return of 2n which would be substantially lower (in the third iteration the return wou...

I am thinking about selling some of my large cap market allocation to rebalance. For years I have been putting new investment funds into small cap, value and reits but I hadn't actually sold overvalued asset classes. I'm getting this feeling as well. I can rebalance with no tax consequences and am ...

The thread is Tobin's q as an estimator dated Tuesday, Aug 19, 2003 at 5:02 pm CDT. I read a little about this but don't think it's the topic we're discussing. I don't know anything about Tobin's Q so I'll back out. I'm not certain (strangely, JWR is[!]), but I think ataloss and I were referring to...

knowing nothing about accounting but listening when ex-auditors raise the issue of agency costs I agree entirely and have stated so several times. I haven't been to the hocus board and won't go, even to look for this, but am interested in where those on the other side of this argument are coming fr...

I look at the 70% of regular salary in this manner. You will no longer pay into FICA 8%, no local taxes on salary earnings 2% (this will vary by location of job), no more saving for FIRE 15% and the saving on taxes for above earnings @25% rate is 6% which adds up to 31% Interesting perspective. Doi...

I would like a bit more of that soft stuff here. OK, a lot more of it. It gets my juices flowing. I, too, like the softer stuff. With a science degree and a business degree, I took enough math and statistics to understand most of the math work here even if I could not create it myself. But I think ...

And there is the problem of the growth rate he was using being possibly optimistic. 2% real growth in earnings/dividends is thrown around a lot, but I've seen 1.5 % used frequently to. Dividends were down to 1% in 2000 + 1.5% growth - 2% safety factor = .5% SWR Crazy numbers! No wonder he fudged, i...

Thanks JWR1945, I am burdened by having read the book a year ago. I am in this same boat. I started reading it again tonight so I can participate in these discussions. I found the first few pages as wonderful as I remembered. Anyone who has not read this book really should check it out of the libra...
