My baby brother is up here in Maine with me. He really wants out of his job. He brought all his retirement data, etc. and I've been trying to convince him that he probably has enough to retire right now if he wants to. Dory36's calculator has been extremely helpful in this regard. Dory has made a lo...

So even though we may be thought of as a bit pigeon-holed I hope you realize that I didn't mean the Index Forum when I said stuck on one topic. In fact, I think the Index Forum discusses a variety of things - I was using it as the example of a healthy forum. At least I was trying to. arrete

I briefly mentioned in another post that FIREes may get a goodly amount of their association with other FIREes through the internet. This is in a large part because FIREes are so rare. I have yet to meet one in my own area. Combine with that the fact that they are often introverted, and the internet...

This is the perfect example of hocus twisting words. I say Nobody, except hocus who can't take a joke, would think intercst might be violent physically. He just doesn't care enough. See? hocus managed to leave out some vital words. Then he does his usual anti-intercst blabber. I can only say that ho...

I'm going to be serious here for a minute. They know that intercst will go into an attack mode instantaneously. Wrong. He is quick verbally . But mostly in smartass mode. Nobody, except hocus who can't take a joke, would think intercst might be violent physically. He just doesn't care enough. Whatev...

All this hoopla is entertaining. I love revisionist writings (not). You crack me up with these comments, Hocus. At least it's good for a laugh. You have arrived at the hocus-zen, beachbumz Now you know all. :) Perhaps if you submit a request with valid reasons beachbumz will consider your request. O...

I'm slightly confused about all this. To me retirement is when you don't have to work. You may want to work, but your finances are such that you don't have to. I can also understand wanting to work and having to work. I wouldn't call it retirement, though it is better than not wanting to work and ha...

Oops. Sometimes I don't read so good. This particular scenario I see as more of a sabbatical/downshifting kind of thing. In the back of your mind, you would always have to worry about employability, and that doesn't seem like a comfortable retirement to me. I like a little more padding. I actually w...

BB - thanks for setting me straight about the housing, but I do think it is chancy if you are reduced to including your housing into your SWR. Normally that isn't done unless you are in an odd position such as living on a double lot where you can sell part, or the like. There are other costs that ar...

My definition of financial independence is the ability to live off your passive investments without the need for any kind of job or employement. I agree I also think there are many 'retirees' that work part time because they want something to do or they are doing something that is fun to them and m...

I find that bunny terrifying. What's it hiding? Why is it disguised? It was just an innocent blue bunny, minding it's own business, when it was kidnapped and force to wear the Groucho nose. Pictures were taken for purposes of blackmail. Actually, that was my children's idea of a joke many years ago...

What to do?

Hi there. It's your favorite mud-slinging, snarling, goon-squad leading ... well, I can't remember all the epithets hurled my way. Anyway, I was just trying to figure out whether to go look at a kitchen remodelling center or spackle my walls. Then it hit me - I could do either right now because I'm ...

since the other FIRE boards already take more of my time than needed. Needs versus wants. Isn't that the old refrain? Why aren't you hanging out on the beach instead of reading a lot of internet stuff? Normal; to put on clothes bought for work So do you wear shorts like the Aussies now that you're ...

I really like those penguins! Say what? Those are Biker Chicks! Maybe I should edited it a little. Doesn't show up very well. Also, I give up on this other thing. My advice would be to ignore those you choose to, fight it out with those you want to, and the rest of us will get along fine. How's tha...
